Which stage are you at?
The general journey for someone buying or signing up for software—especially in the context of SaaS (Software as a Service)—follows a series of well-defined stages. While the specifics can vary depending on whether the buyer is an individual or a business, and the complexity of the software, the process typically includes the following key steps:
1. Awareness
The journey begins when the buyer becomes aware of a need or problem that could be solved by software. This can happen through recommendations, advertising, online research, or word of mouth.
2. Research and Discovery
Buyers actively seek out information about possible solutions. They compare products, read reviews, consult peers, and visit vendor websites. The abundance of online information makes this stage increasingly self-directed.
3. Stakeholder Involvement
For business purchases, multiple stakeholders are involved—often forming a buying committee that includes IT, finance, end users, and executives. Their input is gathered to ensure the software meets organizational needs and compliance requirements.
4. Define Requirements
Buyers clarify what features, integrations, security, and compliance standards are necessary. This often involves creating a requirements document and prioritizing needs.
If you are in steps 2 to 4, book a demo with a team member:
5. Evaluation and Comparison
Potential solutions are shortlisted. Buyers may request demos, sign up for free trials, or attend live presentations to assess usability and fit. They compare pricing, features, customer support, and other critical factors.
6. Decision and Purchase
After evaluating options, buyers negotiate terms, finalize pricing, and make the purchase decision. This may involve legal and procurement reviews for business buyers.
7. Onboarding and Implementation
Once the software is acquired, the onboarding process begins. This includes setting up accounts, integrating with existing systems, and training users.
8. Ongoing Use and Support
Users engage with the software in their daily workflows. Support resources, documentation, and customer service play a role in ensuring adoption and satisfaction.
9. Feedback, Renewal, and Expansion
Buyers provide feedback, consider renewals, and may explore additional features or cross-sell opportunities. For SaaS, ongoing engagement and periodic renewal are crucial stages.
